Medium-chain Triglycerides (MCTs) are fat derived from coconut oil metabolized differently than the Long-chain Triglycerides (LCTs) found in most foods.
Types of MCTs
- C6: Caproic Acid
-Caproic acid (hexanoic acid) is a carboxylic acid produced from hexane. Thus, it has the chemical formula of C6H12O2 or (structural formula = CH3(CH2)4COOH.
- C8: Caprylic Acid
-Caprylic acid (octanoic acid) is a medium-chain fatty acid (MCFA). Thus, it has the chemical formula C8H16O2 (structural formula = H3C(CH2)6COOH).
- C10: Capric Acid
-Capric acid (also known as decanoic acid or decylic acid) is a medium-chain fatty acid (MCFA) with the chemical formula C10H20O2 (structural formula = CH3(CH2)8COOH).
- C12: Lauric Acid
-Lauric acid (also known as dodecanoic acid) is a saturated fatty acid with a 12-carbon atom chain, and as such, it has many properties with medium-chain fatty acids. It has the chemical formula of C12H24O2.
Triglyceride is a technical term for fat. It has two main purposes: either burned for energy or stored in the body as fat. The chemical structure of triglycerides, especially the length of their fatty acid chains, is what gives them their name, which can be short ( < 6 carbon atoms), medium (6-12 carbon atoms) or long ( 13-21 carbon atoms). MCT oils have molecules easily digested by the body. MCT oils turned to energy, providing lasting energy and nutrition and supporting a healthy weight.
